ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION

THIS DIVISION CONSISTS OF THE SHERIFF, TWO CHIEF DEPUTIES, AND A JAIL ADMINISTRATOR. THE ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMAND, POLICY, BUDGETS, AND PLANNING. THIS DIVISION PROVIDES THE LEADERSHIP AND DIRECTION OF THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND JAIL.

PATROL DIVISION

THIS DIVISION IS THE BACKBONE OF THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE.   THE PATROL DIVISION HAS THREE SERGEANTS AND 16 UNIFORM DEPUTIES.  THE PATROL DIVISION PROVIDES 24-HOUR LAW ENFORCEMENT TO WALKER COUNTY CITIZENS. SEVERAL THOUSAND CALLS EACH YEAR ARE ANSWERED BY THE PATROL DIVISION.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION

THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION IS HIGHLY TRAINED AND STAFFED WITH FIVE INVESTIGATORS AND SUPERVISED BY ONE CHIEF DEPUTY.  THIS UNIT IS TASKED TO INVESTIGATE ALL FELONY CRIMES SUCH AS MURDER, RAPE, ROBBERY, BURGLARY, AND THEFT.   WHICH OCCUR IN THE SHERIFF'S JURISDICTION. THE MEMBERS OF THIS UNIT MUST COLLECT EVIDENCE, DOCUMENT FACTS, AND PRESENT TESTIMONY IN COURT.

COMMUNICATION DIVISION

THE COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION IS SUPERVISED BY ONE SERGEANT AND HAS SEVEN COMMUNICATIONS OFFICERS.  THIS DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANSWERING ALL EMERGENCY CALLS THAT COME TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND DISPATCHING SEVERAL THOUSAND CALLS TO PATROL DIVISION EACH YEAR.

COUNTY JAIL DIVISION

THREE LIEUTENTANTS AND FOUR SERGEANTS SUPERVISE THE WALKER COUNTY JAIL. THERE ARE 23 CORRECTIONAL DEPUTIES.  THIS DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OPERATING THE COUNTY JAIL WHERE UP TO 250 INMATES CAN BE HOUSED.

K-9 DIVISION

THE K-9 UNIT CONSISTS OF ONE DEPUTY SHERIFF (HANDLER) AND ONE NARCOTICS DETECTION DOG. THIS DIVISION SEARCHES FOR ILLEGAL DRUGS IN VEHICLES, BUIDINGS, AND SCHOOLS. THE HANDLER AND THE DOG MUST OPERATE AS A TEAM. THE NARCOTICS DOG AND HANDLER ARE INVOLVED IN CONSTANT TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION.

NARCOTICS DIVISION

THIS UNIT IS A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN THE SHERIFFS OFFICE AND THE JASPER POLICE DEPARTMENT.  THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT PROVIDES THREE DEPUTY SHERIFFS TO THIS SPECIAL UNIT THAT HANDLES ALL ILLEGAL DRUG INVESTIGATIONS IN WALKER COUNTY.

SPECIAL OPERATIONS GROUP

THIS UNIT IS AN EXTENSION OF THE PATROL DIVISION THAT IS LEAD BY ONE SERGEANT AND HAS EIGHT TEAM MEMBERS.  THE SPECIAL OPERATIONS GROUP IS OFTEN CALLED AFTER THE PATROL UNITS HAVE ARRIVED AT AN INCIDENT. THIS UNIT IS TRAINED IN HOSTAGE INCIDENTS AND SUSPECTS THAT ARE BARRICADED.

THIS TEAM CONSISTS OF DEPUTIES FROM THE PATROL DIVISION. THEY ARE CONSTANTLY TRAINED IN THIS SPECIAL FIELD Of LAW ENFORCEMENT AND ALL MEMBERS OF THIS TEAM ARE REQUIRED TO PASS A RIGOROUS PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST BI-ANNUALLY.

RESERVE DEPUTY DIVISION

 THIS DIVISION IS STAFFED WITH VOLUNTEER CITIZENS WHO DONATE HUNDREDS OF HOURS TO BENEFIT LAW ENFORCEMENT. THIS UNIT IS VITAL TO THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND HAS MANY DEDICATED PERSONS WHO DONATE THEIR TIME.

THIS UNIT IS SUPERVISED BY ONE SERGEANT FROM THE PATROL DIVISION. THERE ARE 25 RESERVE DEPUTIES WHO ASSIST THE PATROL DIVISION IN MANY FUNCTIONS SUCH AS: RIDING WITH PATROL DIVISION ASSISTING WITH PARKING, CROWD CONTROL, AND PRISONER TRANSPORT.

RESERVE DEPUTIES MUST COMPLETE FIREARMS AND QUALIFICATION. THEREFORE, NUMEROUS CLASSES ARE HELD FOR THIS PURPOSE.  AT PRESENT, THERE ARE EIGHT RESERVE DEPUTIES THAT HAVE COMPLETED THE ALABAMA 480-HOUR POLICE ACADEMY TRAINING.

CRIME PREVENTION DIVISION

THIS UNIT HAS ONE FULL-TIME DEPUTY THAT HANDLES THE D. A. R. E. PROGRAMS IN THE WALKER COUNTY SCHOOLS.  THIS DIVISION ALSO ASSISTS WITH THE SHERIFFS NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PROGRAMS AND SENIOR CITIZENS PROGRAMS SUCH AS T. R. I. A. D. THE SHERIFF AND THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE DIVISION ASSISTS THE CRIME PREVENTION DIVISION.

COURT SECURITY DIVISION

THE COURT SECURITY DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING COURTROOM SECURITY DURING CRIMINAL AND CIVIL TRAILS.   DEPUTIES ASSIGNED TO THIS DIVISION MUST OPERATE METAL DETECTORS, MAINTAIN SECURITY, AND PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR JUDICIAL OFFICERS IN THE COURTHOUSE.

CLERICAL DIVISION

THERE IS ONE CHIEF CLERK IN THIS DIVISION AND FOUR CLERKS.

THIS DIVISION MAINTAINS ALL RECORDS FOR THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE INCLUDING: PURCHASE ORDERS, CIVIL PROCESS, WARRANTS, DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT INVENTORY, TYPING REPORTS, AND ISSUANCE OF PISTOL PERMITS. THE CLERICAL DIVISION HANDLES THOUSANDS OF DOCUMENTS AND FILES EACH YEAR.

CIVIL PROCESS DIVISION

THIS DIVISION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SERVICE OF ALL CIVIL PROCESS IN WALKER COUNTY.  THE ENTIRE CIVIL PROCESS DIVISION UNIT IS STAFFED BY FIVE NON-SWORN CIVILIANS WHO SERVE HUNDREDS OF LEGAL DOCUMENTS EACH MONTH.
