Sheriff John Tirey began his Law Enforcement career at Carbon Hill Police Department, then worked at Dora Police Department until his career began with the Walker County Sheriff's Department in 1982. Sheriff Tirey worked in the Walker County Jail, Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations. Sheriff Tirey was elected Sheriff in 1995.

Sheriff Tirey is a member of the Faternal Order of Police, Lions Club, Alabama Sheriffs Association and National Sheriffs Association. He is a Mason and a Shriner

He graduated from the University of Alabama Law Enforcement Academy and Jefferson State Junior College
