J.C. Poe, Jr. began his criminal justice career at the Jasper Police Department in 1976, then moved to the Walker County Sheriff's Department in 1983 as an Investigator. In 1991 he was assigned to command the Walker County Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET). Sheriff Tirey appointed Poe as Chief Deputy Sheriff in 1995 where he served until his retirement in 2002. J.C. is a 1972 graduate of Curry High School and attended Walker College and Bevill State.He is also a graduate of the University of Alabama Law Enforcement Academy.
He is an active member of the Sumiton Church of God, Walker Board of Realtors, Leadership Walker County Alumni, Smith Lake Civic Association, Board Member of the Smith Lake Task Force, and is a volunteer at the Hope Clinic.
August, 2008, Gov. Bob Riley appointed Poe to fill the un-expired term of Coroner Joey Vick.
It is the intention of Poe to modernize and professionalize the Walker County Coroner's Office. This Web site and the appointment of qualified Deputy Coroners being the first visible examples.
